Webber: I'm Eager To Learn

Keeper excited by Pompey switch

26 January 2022

Ollie Webber is excited at the opportunity to continue his footballing education at Pompey.

The highly-rated 21-year-old keeper has completed a transfer from Crystal Palace and will now compete with Gavin Bazunu for a place between the sticks.

He has been able to grow alongside an experienced Spaniard and England international at Selhurst Park.

And now he is looking forward to working with the Republic of Ireland’s number one stopper on the south coast.

Webber said: “I’m absolutely delighted because this is such a massive club and I couldn’t wait to get the deal sorted.

“I’m excited to get started here, train in a first team environment every day and try to push Gavin.

“He’s got experience of playing games – both here and at international level – and I can learn a lot from him.

“I’ve also grown a lot from my time at Crystal Palace and working alongside keepers like Vicente Guaita and Jack Butland.

“They’ve got so much experience and you try to pick things up from them, while they’re always on hand to offer advice.

“I’ve spoken to (goalkeeping coach) Michael Poke a few times and he puts on really good sessions, so I’m also excited to learn off him.”

Bazunu’s distribution and ability to start attacks has been key for Pompey this term and Webber feels he can also fulfil that role.

The Northern Ireland under-21 international said: “I’m very comfortable with the ball at my feet.

"That is important in the modern game, while I also feel I’m good at keeping it out of the net.”
