Cowley Pleased With Prolific Pompey

Boss reflects on pre-season win at Leyton Orient

19 July 2022

It is easy to feel lethargic and want to down tools when the mercury climbs the thermometer.

So Danny Cowley was pleased to see his Pompey side avoid wilting in the east London sunshine against Leyton Orient.

There was a ruthless edge shown in a 5-2 pre-season success at Brisbane Road, with Joe Pigott bagging a brace.

A Marlon Pack strike, Ronan Curtis penalty and comical Shad Ogie own-goal completed the rout, although Cowley felt more could be done to deny the Londoners their consolations.

The Blues boss said: “We created some really good chances and we were also incredibly clinical, while it was nice for Joe to get off the mark.

“There were some assists for Reeco and a great finish from Marlon – I thought it was really positive from us with the ball.

"It was warm out there, but we’re not moaning about that. It could be like that at Sheffield Wednesday, so it’s good preparation.”

“I was disappointed with the two we conceded – the first comes from a long throw and we didn’t mark the space well enough.

“The second one was an average cross and we had two players who didn’t deal with it at the near post.

“It was warm out there, but we’re not moaning about that. It could be like that at Sheffield Wednesday, so it’s good preparation.”

Sean Raggett, Joe Morrell and Jayden Reid all missed the contest and there was mixed news on the trio from Cowley.

He said: “Sean’s going to be fine and we’re expecting him to play on Saturday, while Joe has had an operation on his groin, but that should only keep him out for three weeks.

“He picked it up in the international break with Wales and it hasn’t quite settled, so it just made sense to tidy it up.

“Jayden had come back in such good shape, but it looks a hamstring tear. We hope for the best and expect the worse, but we’ll have to see what the specialist says.”
