Cowley Searching For Away Grit

Boss looks ahead to Sheffield Wednesday test

29 July 2022

Pompey were absolutely flying at Fratton Park in the second half of last season.

In fact, only three sides finished the campaign with a better record than their 14 victories on home soil.

But it was not the same story on the road, with points proving to be much more difficult to accumulate.

And the action came to a close with a heavy defeat to play-off bound Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

That is, coincidentally, where Pompey now begin the new season and Danny Cowley hopes his side can be more resolute away from Portsea Island.

The Blues boss said: “We were able to make Fratton Park the fortress it should be – winning eight and drawing two of the last 10 games.

“But away from home we have to find a way to be more gritty and resilient, as well as finding more goals.

“We were drawing games that we should have won and losing games that we should have drawn, so there’s work for us to do.

“Sheffield Wednesday had the best home record in the division last season and have an incredible team with a lot of depth.

“But it’s a great challenge for us. Our goal is to win on Saturday, then wake up on Sunday and put all our focus into try to beat Lincoln the following week.

“If we do that, then we’ll wake up the next day and try to win against Cardiff, and we’ll keep working like that.”

Cowley has already brought nine new players through the door this summer and is pleased with how his squad is looking.

He said; “We’re in a better place than we were 12 months ago and I like the group that we have here now.

“There are a lot of good characters and I feel that spirit and togetherness will grow as the season unfolds and those relationships develop.

“We’ve been pleased with the recruitment we’ve done so far and it’s been nice to bring more young players into the building.

“There are also some leaders who have been brought in to help support them and also drive our standards.

“We’ve all had to be hands on and it’s been 24/7, but we’ve worked hard – and still have more to do – and now we’re just super excited for the season to start.”
