Cowley: We Adapted Well

Boss reacts to friendly win at Gillingham

16 July 2022

There was plenty to please the 248 away supporters who made the journey for Pompey’s latest pre-season trip.

And Danny Cowley also took quite a few positives from a 2-1 friendly victory over Gillingham in sunny Kent.

Reeco Hackett opened the scoring in his first match of the summer following a knee injury at the back end of last term.

Olly Lee levelled for the hosts after the break, only for Connor Ogilvie to head home a last-gasp winner against his former club.

Cowley was also pleased to see new loan signings Josh Griffiths and Joe Pigott make their first appearances in a Pompey shirt.

The Blues boss said: “There are some new relationships and partnerships, along with a slight change of system for us.

"It was lovely to have Reeco back and to see him score what was a well-worked goal. It was a lovely pass from Michael and a calm, composed finish."

“When you add in the warm weather and a sticky pitch, there were definitely some challenges that we had to deal with.

“But I felt that the players adapted well. You have to find a way sometimes in football and that’s what we did.

“I’ve been pleased with our effort and application, although we’re still looking to bring some pace and power into the front end of the pitch, which we’re working hard to do.

“It was lovely to have Reeco back and to see him score what was a well-worked goal. It was a lovely pass from Michael and a calm, composed finish.

“We also enjoyed seeing Joe on the pitch for the first time. You can see that if the ball is played into him, he’ll look after it for us.

“Josh was another one making his debut and these new relationships we’re seeing is what pre-season is all about.

“On top of all that, it’s always a positive if you can score a late winner and we’re pleased to come away with the result.”
