Hawks 0 Pompey 3

Tunnicliffe, Curtis and Vincent on target at Westleigh Park

2 July 2022

Pompey got their pre-season schedule off to the perfect start with a comfortable victory against Havant & Waterlooville at Westleigh Park.

They had to be patient, though, with Ryan Tunnicliffe and Ronan Curtis finally making their pressure count late in the first half.

And substitute Liam Vincent wrapped things up just after the break, courtesy of a fine 20-yard free-kick.

Danny Cowley named a different side in each half for the traditional summer contest, with a total of five trialists used.

Reeco Hackett and Denver Hume were missing after finishing last season injured, while Michael Jacobs and Marlon Pack were likely being saved for Sunday’s trip to Gosport.

Former Blues loanee Josh Passley started for the home side, who had Fratton academy product Seok Jae Lee on the bench.

It was Pompey who dominated proceedings in the first half, but they lacked a bit of fluency – perhaps not surprising at this early stage of pre-season.

An early long-range drive from Curtis was kept out by Ross Worner, while a teasing Marcus Harness delivery could not be forced over the line.

Then after Curtis teed-up Harness inside the area, it took a brilliant block from Joe Newton to stop the deadlock being broken.

There was not much for Alex Bass to deal with at the other end, although the keeper comfortably gathered by James Roberts effort.

It was Pompey doing most of the attacking and they finished the first half with a real flourish to go in for the break with a commanding lead.

TUNNICLIFFE opened the scoring on 34 minutes, squeezing the ball home from a tight angle, seemingly with the help of a Joe Oastler deflection.

And the lead was doubled moments later, with CURTIS arriving at the back post to convert a fine Harness delivery.

Pompey’s starting trialist almost added a third just before the interval, winning the ball in the middle of the pitch and hitting an audacious long-range strike that dipped narrowly over.

It was a less familiar – and experienced – side that took to the pitch for the visitors following the interval.

Many fans were getting a first sight of VINCENT and he certainly made a good impression, curling home a fine free-kick after Jay Mingi had been fouled.

The young defender lined up another set-piece soon after, but this time saw the ball fly straight into the wall.

Hawks threatened to reduce their deficit on the hour mark, only for Danny Wright to divert Gianni Crichlow’s cross over the bar.

They were certainly looking more like to score than before the break, although Pompey were also trying to add to the scoring.

Dan Gifford managed to get forward and lay off for Jayden Reid, who fired narrowly wide, while a trialist could not beat Hawks stopper Charlie Searle from close range.

The game was starting to drift towards a conclusion, despite the best efforts of the home side to find consolation goal.

And they might have fallen further behind late on, with Alfie Bridgman’s ball into the box ricocheting off Newton and flying over.

There were ultimately no more goals to entertain a healthy crowd, but Pompey can be satisfied with their opening efforts.
