Blues Back In Training

Squad return for pre-season work

20 June 2022

The weather is more suited to test match cricket, while tennis at Wimbledon is about to claim the nation’s interest.

But Pompey have begun their preparations for the new football campaign, with players returning to the club’s Copnor Road base.

There were plenty of new haircuts sported as the squad arrived for the first day of pre-season training.

Following a meeting of players and staff, there were fitness tests conducted in the gym, which was followed by a gruelling run.

But the footballs were soon out, with the group supplemented by a handful of trialists for Danny Cowley to cast his eye over.

“We’re really happy to be back,” said a smiling Blues boss. “It’s probably my favourite day of the year and I enjoyed seeing everyone again.

“Everyone was back and, importantly, they were all healthy – which is always a massive positive for me.”

Joe Morrell was the only absentee, afforded extra time off after representing Wales in the Nations League and recovering from a broken toe.

After a break for lunch, the players returned to the pitches, continuing to work up a sweat under the sunny south coast skies.

Meanwhile, the goalkeepers trained separately and were put through their paces by new coach Joe Prodomo.

It was a testing day and there will no doubt be some sore muscles as the side blow off any holiday cobwebs.

But there are less than two weeks before the opening friendly fixture at Havant & Waterlooville, while the start of the League One action moves ever closer.
