Hirst: I'm Feeling Confident

Striker bagged a brace against Accrington

5 March 2022

George Hirst has certainly enjoyed a productive few days in a Pompey shirt at Fratton Park.

Fresh from finding the target in Tuesday night’s narrow win over Oxford, he bagged a brace in a 4-0 rout of Accrington.

The striker turned home a low Mahlon Romeo centre and later converted a corner from Ryan Tunnicliffe.

Sean Raggett and Tunnicliffe were also on target, as the Blues made light work of collecting the points, despite Marcus Harness being sent off in the first half.

And Hirst – who received a standing ovation when he was replaced by Tyler Walker – was delighted to extend his goal tally

He said: “It was tough after going down to 10 men, but we showed great character to just keep it going.

“We got the second and then went in at half-time thinking that there were definitely more goals for us.

"My dad’s always on at me about being more of a threat from corners with my height, so I’ll give him a ring to see what he makes about the second."

“There’s a lot of energy in this team and to win the game 4-0 – and keep a clean sheet – is something for us to really build on.

“It's been brilliant for me personally and I feel like I’m starting to hit a bit of form now – hopefully I can keep that going.

“I just want to score goals and I’ve got another two, so I just need to continue knocking them in and if I do that, we won’t be in a bad place.

“I’ve got a good relationship with Mahlon and knew he was looking to whip the ball across, so it was just about getting in front of my man.

“My dad’s always on at me about being more of a threat from corners with my height, so I’ll give him a ring to see what he makes about the second.

“Confidence is high and this is the most I’ve enjoyed my football in a while. I’ve wanted to prove to myself what I can do.

“I’m getting a run of games and showing the supporters what I’m capable of, although the most important thing is that we’re winning.”
