Pompey Amputee Team Win League Cup

Blues beat Everton and Manchester City to lift trophy

23 March 2022

Pompey’s amputee team recently enjoyed success at the Premier League Cup after seeing off both Everton and Manchester City.

The event took place at Reaseheath College in Nantwich, with the Blues having to battle from behind in both matches to secure the silverware.

They trailed 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 against the Toffees before eventually emerging 7-4 victors to book a spot in the final.

TJ Yates and Ray Westbrook both bagged a brace, while Che Gray and Matt Dean also found the target and there was an own-goal.

It meant there would be a clash between the top two sides in the Premier League this season, with Manchester City standing in the way of the trophy.

Pompey twice recovered from conceding to level the contest at the interval, first through Dean and then a Yates penalty.

But City came charging out of the blocks at the start of the season and were leading 4-2 with just 10 minutes remaining.

A red card meant the Blues received a numerical advantage, though, and they made the most of it, with Dean and Yates taking the tie to extra-time.

It seemed as though Manchester City were playing for penalties, but with just seconds remaining, Westbrook bent a free-kick around the wall and into the net.

The goal sparked wild celebrations from all the players and the final whistle soon followed before the side were able to lift the cup.
