Blues end season with a win

1 May 2022

Pompey Women ended the season on a positive note by beating high-flying Ipswich at Westleigh Park.

Prolific striker Cherelle Khassal netted the only goal of the National League contest late in the first half.

Jay Sadler made two changes from the side that beat Moneyfields to lift the PDFA Cup earlier in the week.

Sammy Quayle and Ava Rowbotham both returned to the starting line-up, with Rosie McDonnell and Annie Rolf making way.

Hannah Haughton had to be alert in the early stages, racing from her line to beat Sarah Brasero-Carreira to Maria Boswell’s clipped pass.

Khassal then tried to catch Sarah Quantrill off her line at the other end of the pitch, but could not quite keep her shot down.

It was a close first half, but the visitors might have fancied their chances of going in for the interval with a lead.

An audacious over-head effort from Natasha Thomas flew straight at Haughton, while the keeper then did even better to deny Brasero-Carreira.

But the Blues started to move through the gears before the break and Khassal was twice frustrated by Quantrill.

And the opener did arrive on 41 minutes, courtesy of a superb curling finish from KHASSAL after she had cut inside from the left.

Ipswich set about trying to find an equaliser once the action restarted and Haughton had to be at her best to parry clear a Thomas drive.

The Blues were not content to sit back and soak up pressure, though, with Khassal almost catching out a back-pedalling Quantrill.

Town were wasteful as they committed players forward and Anna Grey diverted a Summer Hughes delivery straight at Haughton.

They eventually ran out of steam and it was the home side who looked more likely to add to the scoring in the closing stages.

Khassal should really have wrapped things up, but fired over the bar after being teed-up by Dani Lane.

Then, in stoppage-time, Khassal squared the ball for skipper Danielle Rowe, whose shot rattled the bar.

But the Blues had already done enough to secure all three points and deny their opponents the runners-up spot.

Pompey: Haughton; Rowe (c), Younger, Gane, Quayle (McDonnell 79); Rowbotham, F.Jones, Lane; Bridge, Albuery (E.Jones 75), Khassal
