Cowley: Our Toughest Game

Boss looking to avoid a cup upset at Hereford

4 November 2022

If anyone knows about FA Cup upsets then it is Danny Cowley.

He was in charge of Lincoln when they caused one of the biggest the competition has ever seen back in 2017.

They won 1-0 away at top-flight Burnley – courtesy of a last-gasp Sean Raggett header – to become the first non-league club to reach the quarter-finals for more than 100 years.

Now, though, Cowley is hoping to avoid becoming a scalp, with his Pompey side in first round action at sixth tier Hereford this evening.

The Blues boss said: “We understand the magnitude of the tie and it’s probably going to be the toughest game of our season.

“Nicky and I have been fortunate enough to manage in eight of the top nine divisions and know exactly what the task is in front of us.

“We’ve got a lot of underdog cup stories in our group and a lot of boys who started out in non-league football.

“I think that experience is really important and it gives us a humility that you need in these type of fixtures.

“We’re excited for the game and it’s brilliant that it’s live on the BBC. We know what the atmosphere will be like.

“We respect that everyone not associated with our club will be supporting Hereford and have to be the best version of ourselves.

“They will be a dangerous opponent and we need to have a laser focus, making sure we approach the game with complete professionalism.

“Our hosts have a lot of experienced players who have featured in the Football League, along with youngsters who will be looking to make the same steps as some of our boys.”

The name Hereford conjures up memories of that famous Ronnie Radford strike to stun Newcastle in 1972.

And the passing of the former Bulls midfielder earlier this week will provide extra poignancy for this evening’s encounter.

Cowley said: “It really was a truly iconic goal – and the inspiration for plenty of underdog stories to come.

“I can vividly recall the pitch being really muddy and John Motson’s famous commentary when the ball hit the top corner.

“It was a goal that transcended eras and it will usually be found at the start of any FA Cup programmes on the BBC.

“I think it gave a lot of inspiration to so many people and so it’s incredibly sad to hear of Ronnie’s passing. Our condolences go to his family, friends and everyone at Hereford.”
