Cowley: We’ll Attack Cup Contests

Boss looks ahead to AFC Wimbledon clash

1 November 2022

Pompey’s quest for League One success takes a break this week, as attention turns to a couple of other competitions.

Friday night sees the potential banana skin that is a trip to non-league Hereford in the first round of the FA Cup.

But first up is a Fratton clash with AFC Wimbledon that will decide who reaches the Papa Johns Trophy knockout stages from Southern Group B.

A win for the hosts would see them finish top of the pile, but only a point is needed to guarantee a spot in the last 32.

And Danny Cowley hopes that his previous selection policy will ensure Pompey get the job done this evening.

The Blues boss said: “Where we are with player availability is not ideal, but we have two cup games this week

“We’re looking forward to them, are going to attack them with real positivity and look to progress in both competitions.

“There will be slightly less recovery with the second game on Friday and so that’s something we need to bear in mind.

“We will try to manage the selection intelligently and have used the Papa Johns Trophy in a really positive way so far.

“There are 12 young players in our group and it’s been good to get them game time – the likes of Zak Swanson and Jay Mingi have really benefitted.

“We’ll also use some of the academy players, although the FA Youth Cup match is on Thursday, so it really is a busy week!”

The Dons have already done enough to go through, but know that a draw is enough for them to be at home in the next round.

Cowley said: “It’s a fantastic story there, with the way they came back after their club was taken away from them.

“The supporters have driven them back to the Football League and although they had a tough season last time, they come here on a good run of form.

“We obviously know Lee Brown well, while Alex Woodyard played for me at Concord, Braintee and Lincoln.”

Pompey have been dealing with an injury crisis, but Cowley revealed that progress is being made in getting a couple of midfielders back onto the pitch.

He said: “Tom Lowery has trained fully with the group again, which has given everyone a lift, while Marlon Pack was back on the grass for the first time.

“They’re both key players for us and so to have them back sooner rather than later will be good for everyone.”
