Blues win on the road in National League

6 November 2022

Pompey Women enjoyed more success on the road with a comfortable 3-0 victory at the National League’s bottom side Crawley Wasps.

Emma Jones, Jazz Younger and Sophie Quirk got the goals to earn the Blues three points on a wet afternoon in Horsham.

Jay Sadler had unsurprisingly stuck with the same side that also took a maximum haul home from Plymouth the previous week.

They got off to a bright start and Quirk fired narrowly over after a Taylor Macdonald corner caused chaos in the box.

The visitors kept pushing for an opener, but it took 29 minutes for them to finally make the breakthrough.

It was worth the wait, though, as JONES won a free-kick 30 yards out and curled it into the top corner of the net.

And the Blues soon had another, with a bullet header from YOUNGER converting another Macdonald corner.

It might have got even better before the break, with a teasing Quirk delivery just evading Leanne Bell at the back post.

Crawley almost reduced their deficit in stoppage-time, though, and Hannah Haughton got down well to deny Amelia Ajao.

Any nerves were quickly put to bed after the restart, as it took less than four minutes for the Blues to strengthen their lead.

It was a venomous strike from QUIRK, who brought the ball down, turned sharply and found the net from the corner of the box.

The same player went close again on the hour mark, rifling in an effort that was kept out by Chrissie Wiggins.

Sadler turned to his bench to provide fresh legs, with the adverse conditions making life tough for both sides.

Two of the newcomers almost combined for a goal on 75 minutes, but Mae Goulden was denied by Wiggins after meeting a low Tierney Scott centre.

Pompey were doing a good job of passing the ball around neatly to keep possession and see out the closing stages.

And another substitute had a chance to wrap things up in style right at the death, with Ella Humphrey firing just past the post.

Pompey: Haughton; Quayle (Humphrey 78), Younger (Collins 83), Rowe (c), Wild; Lane, Macdonald, Rowbotham (Rolf 68); Bell, Jones (Goulden 73), Quirk (Scott 68)
