Curtis: Wembley Return Would Be Amazing

Forward looks ahead to Papa Johns Trophy tie at Ipswich

21 November 2022

He is the only player from the 2019 Wembley triumph against Sunderland to still be playing at Pompey.

And Ronan Curtis hopes they can enjoy more Papa Johns Trophy success in this season’s competition.

He started on that memorable day in the capital, which saw the Blues win on penalties to lift the silverware for the first time.

But Curtis knows they could not have asked for a much trickier test this season, with a trip to high-flying Ipswich in round two.

He said: “After Friday, our minds immediately turned to the cup games that we’ve got this week and they’re a great test for the lads.

“We want to go as far as we can in all competitions and the Papa Johns Trophy gives sides an excellent chance of getting to Wembley.

“I remember what that was like last time and it would be amazing to do it again, so hopefully we can win on Tuesday.

“You couldn’t really ask for a tougher draw than away to Ipswich, though – their squad is full of great players.

“But we have to be confident and focus on our own game because we know we’ve got the players who are capable of going there and getting a win.”

Curtis injured his ankle in the recent FA Cup success at Hereford, but made a quick recovery and was able to come off the bench during the draw with Derby.

He said: “I was working hard in the gym and doing all the work that was needed, so it was a relief to get back so soon.

“It’s always good to get out on the grass as soon as possible after an injury and just to get a feel for it again.

“Derby had great players, with boys who have played in the Premier League, but I felt they were there for the taking.

“We know how hard it is to win games of football, but our record at Fratton Park is still an impressive one.”
