Pompey Women Reach Hampshire Cup Semi-Finals

Blues beat their development side on penalties

18 November 2022

Pompey Women reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Cup after beating their own development side on penalties.

They fought from behind to lead at Westleigh Park, only to then concede a last-gasp equaliser at Westleigh Park.

But it was the senior side who ultimately prevailed with a 4-3 victory in the shoot-out to reach the last four.

The development team took an early lead when Macey Walters found the back of the net with a long-range strike.

But Nicole Barrett latched onto a low cross shortly after the interval, hitting the target from six yards out to level the tie.

And Jay Sadler's side went ahead with time ticking away, as Ella Wild's neat finish opened her account for the club.

With a small amount of injury-time signalled by the officials, it looked as though the win had been secured.

But with just seconds remaining, Chelsea Burr took advantage of a poor back-pass to send the game to penalties.

And it was the 14-time winners who ultimately triumphed, despite a save from Georgia Jenkins to deny Leanne Bell.

Ella Wild, Dani Lane, Ava Rowbotham and keeper Hannah Haughton all found the net, while the development team were unsuccessful with two of their attempts.

Pompey: Haughton; Collins, Younger, Wild; Barrett (Lane 52), Hill (Macdonald 85), Rolf, Quayle; Bell, Goulden (Quirk 85), Scott (Rowbotham 90)

Pompey Development: Jenkins, Burr, Granger, Woodard, Saunders, Smith, Luke, Aldridge, Wilson, Sanderson, Walters
