Cowley Hails Striking Combo

Boss praises Bishop and Scarlett partnership ahead of Fleetwood test

7 October 2022

It is a strike partnership that has already paid plenty of dividends for Pompey this season.

And Danny Cowley is delighted by the understanding that has been struck up between Colby Bishop and Dane Scarlett.

The duo have contributed 12 goals between them so far this season to help the side get off to a positive start.

Cowley believes the summer signing from Accrington and teenage Tottenham loanee have all the attributes required to maintain their red-hot form.

The Blues boss said: “They’re our first defenders and bring a real intensity against the ball. They’re both aggressive and want to go after it.

“That brings us a front foot mentality that we like and then with the ball, they’re a nice foil for each other.

“Who wouldn’t want to play alongside Colby? He’s unbelievably unselfish and has such a wonderful first touch.

“He possesses an ability to bring other people into the game and, of course, also carries a real goal threat.

“Dane is only 18, but what an intensity he plays with. He’s got a great game understanding and fantastic movement.

“He never looks far away from a goal and when they play together, it’s a really good combination for us.”

The pair will hope to continue their hot streak when Pompey take on Fleetwood at Fratton Park this weekend.

Cowley said: “There’s a lot to like about them and Scott Brown has done a really good job since he went in there.

“I think they recruited aggressively over the summer and since the first game of the season, they’ve only lost twice – with one of those coming against Everton in the cup.

“They’ve drawn six and probably haven’t got the number of wins they should, but there have certainly been some good results for them.

“Fleetwood have got their own aggressive pressers at the top end of the pitch and are big enough to deal with the physicality of League One.”
