Boss happy with Papa Johns Trophy victory

4 October 2022

Three points, five goals, a clean sheet, valuable minutes for players and a couple of teenage debutants.

All in all, Pompey’s Papa Johns Trophy clash with Aston Villa’s under-21s resulted in a positive night at Fratton Park.

Early goals from Ronan Curtis and Michael Jacobs were added to by a second half Josh Koroma brace before Reeco Hackett wrapped a 5-0 victory.

And Danny Cowley was impressed by a lot of what he witnessed from his much changed side in the group stage contest.

The Blues boss said: “I enjoy these games because I think you always learn a lot about your group and I liked what I saw from us.

“There was a good attitude, energy and intensity – that all comes from enthusiasm, which is an important quality.

“We played some really nice football and in 15 years as a manager, I can’t remember being so dominant in a game.

“I thought we looked bright in possession and moved the ball around quickly, while everyone connected well.

“It felt like a really strong team performance and it was great to finish the game with so many young ones on the pitch.

“Adam Payce got some more minutes, while it was nice for Harvey Laidlaw and Brian Quarm to come on for their debuts.

“The senior players conducted themselves in a good manner and so it was a positive night for our club.”

Striker Joe Pigott was brought off during the first half, but the striker should quickly be back in contention.

Cowley said: “We had these chest infections within the group leading up to the Ipswich game and he was just feeling the effects of that.

“Joe wasn’t great on Monday, but was desperate to play and it’s nothing more sinister than that. We’re hoping he’ll be available for the weekend."
