Cowley: We Lacked Guile

Boss reflects on Shrewsbury stalemate

29 October 2022

Possession, shots, corners – all of the statistics at Fratton Park were firmly in Pompey’s favour.

Except, of course, the one that counted, with the hosts being held to a 1-1 draw by a stubborn Shrewsbury side.

Elliott Bennett’s finish saw them take the lead completely against the run of play, only for Zak Swanson to immediately level.

But Pompey could not turn their dominance into any more goals, much to the chagrin of Danny Cowley.

The Blues boss said: “For everyone associated with the club, there’s a feeling of frustration – you won’t see a more one-sided game.

“We dominated possession, territory and shots, but conceded a really soft goal from their only effort on target.

“That’s happened three times at home recently – Fleetwood did it with their first attack and the same with Oxford.

“I think we’ve had four shots on target against us in three games and have conceded three goals, so that’s really frustrating.

“But I thought it was a good response to falling behind and it was a nice equaliser. Overall, though, we lacked a bit of creativity and guile.

“Shrewsbury just sat 11 men behind the ball. That’s absolutely their prerogative, although it surprised me because they’ve got top players.

“We understand that teams will sometimes come here and do that, but we have to be good enough to break them down.

“So even though we managed to do some positive things, we weren’t able to find that little bit of quality.

“We’re trying to go for two points a game – which isn’t easy in this division – and this week we’re five from three matches, so are slightly behind that.

“You have to understand the context, though. Zak and Jay Mingi had never started a league game, but have now done three on the trot and I’m proud of both of them.”

Sean Raggett went off with a back injury for the second match in succession and Cowley provided a further disappointing update on the injury front.

He said: “It’s really bad news for Joe Rafferty, who needs another operation. That’s a tough one for all of us to take.

“Reeco Hackett trained on Friday and felt good, but has woken up poorly with a sickness bug and so we had to change the team.

“Clark Robertson also had it and was throwing up in the changing room, although was able to play and credit to him for that.”
