Rowbotham and Jones on target for Blues

30 October 2022

Pompey Women made a welcome return to winning ways by battling from behind to beat Plymouth in the National League.

Ava Rowbotham and Emma Jones both found the target in Devon after Lily Greenslade had given the hosts an early lead.

Jay Sadler made three changes from the side beaten at Oxford the previous week, with Sammy Quayle, Taylor MacDonald and Jones all starting.

They got off to a bright start, with Macdonald firing a shot narrowly wide after Sophie Quirk had cut the ball back for her.

But Argyle were soon on the attack themselves and Hannah Haughton had to deal with efforts from Zoe Cunningham and Amber Pollock.

Both sides were doing everything they could to break the deadlock and Jasmine Read punched the ball clear when Jones spun sharply and tried her luck.

It was the Pilgrims who did go ahead on 18 minutes, though, with Greenslade finding the net following good work from Pollock.

The visitors tried to hit back immediately, but Jones’ attempt from the edge of the box was parried away by Read.

And the scores were level before the break, as ROWBOTHAM finished from close range after Danielle Rowe had clipped the ball into her path.

Pompey continued to build momentum following the restart and Jones was again denied by Read after Quirk had escaped down the left and sent in a delivery.

The Pilgrims were then left owing a debt of gratitude to the woodwork, which twice came to their rescue in the space of a few seconds.

Quirk cut the ball back for Jones to smash against the upright, while Dani Lane also struck the post when she followed up.

And the Blues' persistence paid off on 76 minutes, with JONES hammering the ball home after being teed-up by Quirk.

Sadler used his bench to provide fresh legs in the quest to see out the contest, with new signing Ella Humphrey having already been brought on for her debut.

Plymouth did their best to find a late equaliser, but were unable to trouble Haughton again, as the visitors made sure they took all three points back to Hampshire.

Pompey: Haughton; Quayle, Younger, Rowe (c), Wild; Lane, Macdonald (Humphrey 74), Rowbotham; Bell (Hill 83), Jones (Scott 87), Quirk (Goulden 90)
