Late heartache for Blues

9 October 2022

Pompey Women conceded two late goals to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against Bridgwater at Westleigh Park.

They had trailed at the break to Faith Bedford’s strike, but strikes from Dani Lane and Leanne Bell appeared to have the Blues on course for victory.

Ellie Sara levelled for the visitors late on, however, and Daisy Ackerman then struck a stoppage-time winner.

Jay Sadler made one change from the side that thrashed Billericay the previous week, with Ava Rowbotham replacing Annie Rolf in midfield.

Pompey started brightly and dangerous crosses from Sophie Quirk and Ella Wild had to be cleared to safety.

Hannah Haughton then did well at the other end of the pitch, making herself big to avert the danger after Bedford had raced through.

It was still the home side looking more likely to break the deadlock, though, and Quirk’s effort was just about held by Beth Howard.

But they fell behind on 26 minutes, with Bridgwater snatching possession and Bedford scuffing the ball into the net.

And Pompey struggled to respond to that setback, as Emily Wilson-White fired narrowly past the post before Haughton denied Maya Kendell.

Haughton was called into action again straight after the restart and did well to keep out Bedford’s close-range attempt.

The scores were level moments later, with a superb long Danielle Rowe pass finding Nicole Barrett on the right and her cross fired home by LANE.

And the contest was turned on its head on the hour mark, as some patient passing play eventually led Rowbotham’s ball being controlled by BELL and curled into the net.

The hosts were now playing with much more confidence and a long-range Quirk strike stung the hands of Howard.

Quirk then delivered a dangerous ball to the back post, where it was nodded down and against the post by Bell.

Bell rattled the woodwork again on 84 minutes, with a long-range rocket striking the top of the crossbar.

It looked as though the Blues had done enough to secure all three points, only to be dealt a double blow at the death.

Sara converted a cross to level the contest and then, just before the final whistle, Ackerman slotted past Haughton to break Pompey hearts.
