Jones bags hat-trick in convincing Blues win

2 October 2022

Emma Jones struck a hat-trick as Pompey Women hit five unanswered goals past Billericay a Westleigh Park.

Taylor Macdonald and Dani Lane were also on target for the Blues, who produced a dominant display.

Jay Sadler made five changes from the side that comfortably beat Crawley in the cup the previous week.

Nicole Barrett, Dani Lane, Annie Rolf, Sophie Quirk and Jones were all restored to the starting line-up.

The hosts looked to attack right from kick-off and after Barrett’s cross was deflected behind, Izzy Collins nodded just over from the resulting corner.

Macdonald also narrowly failed to find the target from the edge of the box following good work from Rolf and Quirk.

It was not all one-way traffic, though, and there were a couple of half-chances for the visitors to keep the Blues focused.

But most of the action was taking place at the other end of the pitch and some desperate defending prevented Jones from converting Lane’s delivery.

Quirk then sent a teasing ball across the face of goal that was agonisingly out of reach for the stretching Leanne Bell.

And the deadlock was broken on 18 minutes, as Barrett’s centre was only cleared as far as JONES, who made no mistake from a few yards out.

JONES then doubled the advantage, keeping her composure to beat Jess Gray after Collins had done well to steal back possession.

Pompey were flying and extended their lead moments later, with a foul on Rolf leading to MACDONALD firing home a superb free-kick.

Hannah Haughton then made sure Billericay did not get back into the contest just before the break, making a fantastic save to deny Danica Dougal from point-blank range.

Half Time: Pompey 3 Billericay 0

Any doubts disappeared shortly after the restart, with the Blues rewarded for making a positive start to the second half.

A loose ball trickled through to LANE, who found the target from close range to put the result beyond doubt.

The prolific Quirk then tried to get in on the act after cutting inside from the left, but her curling effort landed on the roof of the net.

But JONES did find the target on 69 minutes, driving forward and slotting the ball home at the near post to complete her treble.

It almost got even better for the Blues, with a Bell strike from the edge of the box rattling the woodwork.

And Sadler used all his substitutes as the seconds ticked down and Pompey comfortably saw out the closing stages.

Pompey: Haughton; Barrett, Rowe (c), Collins (Scott 75), Wild; Lane, Macdonald (Rowbotham 68), Rolf; Bell (Hill 81), Jones (Goulden 85), Quirk (Harney 87)
