Robertson: A Wake-Up Call

Skipper apologises for loss at Charlton

17 October 2022

Clark Robertson has apologised for Pompey’s poor performance in a defeat at Charlton.

The skipper was particularly annoyed to see the home side score twice from set-pieces in the 3-0 reverse.

Ryan Inniss and Eoghan O’Connell headed home for the Addicks, with Corey Blackett-Taylor also on target.

And Robertson knows that the Blues have to make a vast improvement if they want to return to winning ways.

He said: “I need to apologise to the fans because they’ve come here in large numbers and want to see a hungry team on the front foot.

“We can’t keep conceding from set-pieces in this league – it’s happened too often this season already.

“So we need to sort that out quickly because if you don’t get them right at both ends of the pitch, you’re not going to win games.

“We have a big team and have to be defending them a lot better. I hold my hands up for the third goal because it was a free header.

“Our response to going behind was poor and we didn’t recover well enough. We didn’t get going at all and were miles off.

"We didn’t win tackles, we didn’t win second balls. It’s a big wake-up call for us and we need to get back to what we were doing earlier in the season.

“We want to be up there challenging and have the players to do that, but performances like this one aren’t good enough.

“I think we’ve been competitive without winning in the previous three games, although we didn’t show any fight against Charlton.

“Now we have to show some character and pick ourselves up quickly. We’ll review the performance and have to learn from it because we can’t let it happen again.”
