Curtis: Character Saw Us Through

Winger reflects on victory over Peterborough

3 September 2022

Ronan Curtis hailed Pompey’s character after they fought from behind to record a fifth successive League One victory.

A mistake at the back allowed Jack Marriott to give Peterborough the lead in just the fifth minute at a packed Fratton Park.

But the Blues kept their composure and Dane Scarlett struck in each half to ensure the points would remain on the south coast.

And Curtis felt that the hosts got their tactics spot on to maintain their unbeaten record in the league this season.

He said: “It was never going to be easy coming up against a very strong Peterborough side and we fell behind.

“But the boys showed great character to stay in the game and two excellent finishes from Dane have got us the win.

"We know how good we are with our fans behind us cheering us on, so we didn’t let our heads drop and once we equalised, it was there for the taking."

“It was a fast and intense plan and we knew we wanted to nick it off Peterborough high up the pitch because they do like to build.

“Overall, I think we got the game-plan right and everyone stuck together to make sure we got all three points.

“We know how good we are with our fans behind us cheering us on, so we didn’t let our heads drop and once we equalised, it was there for the taking.”

Teenage Tottenham loanee Scarlett has now netted four times in his past three appearances for Pompey.

Curtis said: “He’s still young, but is a great talent and just needs to stay grounded. I said to him recently that once he got his first goal, he’d go on a mad run.

“That’s exactly what he’s doing and his confidence is really high at the minute, so hopefully that will continue.

“It’s no surprise that he’s at Spurs and now he has to keep going the way he has been and not look back.”
