Pompey Women 4 Crawley Wasps 1

Cup victory for Blues

25 September 2022

Pompey Women secured comfortable progress in the National League Cup with a 4-1 victory over Crawley Wasps.

All of their goals arrived before the break, with Sophie Quirk adding a brace to earlier strikes from Anisha Hill and Jazz Younger.

Success in the determining round tie – which took place at Gosport-based Fleetlands – means the Blues advance to the main tournament, while their opponents drop into the plate competition.

Jay Sadler made six changes from the side narrowly beaten by London Bees in the league the previous week.

Izzy Collins, Taylor Macdonald, Leanne Bell, Mae Goulden, Mia Adaway and Hill all came into the starting line-up.

But Adaway’s afternoon came to an abrupt end, with an injury suffered in the opening seconds seeing her replaced by Quirk.

And the newcomer soon made an impact by connecting with a low Danielle Rowe delivery and sending the ball rocketing against the post.

The deadlock was broken on 19 minutes, though, with Collins and Quirk combining to tee-up HILL to slot home.

Pompey soon doubled their advantage, as Macdonald sent in an inch-perfect cross for YOUNGER to convert at the back post.

The home side had a third goal late in the first half, when QUIRK reacted quickest after Goulden’s effort had been parried into her path.

But there was still time for them to strike again before the whistle blew for the interval, with QUIRK driving a 25-yard shot into the net.

It looked like the Blues had already done more than enough to secure their spot in the next round of the competition.

But any feelings of complacency soon vanished, with Crawley showing their attacking intent following the restart.

Hannah Haughton was twice called into action, tipping over a long-range Tish Nicholls attempt before dealing with Ciara Hynes’ free-kick.

And the Wasps did reduce their deficit on 54 minutes, courtesy of a fierce Dayna Chong strike from outside the area.

Despite a much improved display from the visitors since the restart, however, they were unable to properly test Haughton again.

Instead it was the Blues who almost added to the scoring right at the death, but Dani Lane was unable to convert Macdonald’s corner.

Pompey: Haughton; Rowe (c), Younger (Lane 75), Collins, Wild; Macdonald, Hill, Rowbotham; Bell (Rolf 88), Goulden (Harney 65), Adaway (Quirk 5 (Scott 80))
