Hume: We Lacked Creative Spark

Defender frustrated by Morecambe stalemate

10 April 2023

Denver Hume felt that Pompey lacked the patience required to break down Morecambe in their Easter Monday contest.

Despite controlling possession throughout at Fratton Park, it was only right at the death when Connor Ripley was seriously troubled by a Reeco Hackett header.

Tom Lowery had earlier sent two shots narrowly past the post as the Blues sought to break down their stubborn opponents.

But Hume felt that they could have shown more quality in the final third in order to avoid another draw.

The defender said: “It was a frustrating one because we had good chances in the first half and probably should have put them away.

“If we’d have done that then it’s a different game after the break and there’s not as much pressure on us.

“We didn’t create as many clear-cut opportunities from them on and Morecambe obviously slowed the game down quite a lot.

"I don’t think the work-rate of the team can be faulted – it was just that little bit of quality that we needed."

“You’ve just got to learn to be patient in those moments and not force things, which we ended up doing.

“I don’t think the work-rate of the team can be faulted – it was just that little bit of quality that we needed.

“Reeco made a good contact right at the end and I didn’t think the keeper would reach it, but he’s done well to get down to it.

“I’m not sure we’d have deserved that for our second half performance, though, because we weren’t creative enough.”

Hume was handed a first start under head coach John Mousinho and was happy with the chance to impress.

He said: “I’ve kept my head down and worked hard in training, so to get the opportunity was good and it’s pleasing to get 90 minutes.

“The body is feeling fine and I’ve been making sure that my fitness is there, although I was probably a bit leggy towards the end.

“It’s frustrating when you’re not involved and you just have to stick at it and train well, so hopefully I can get as many minutes as possible in the final few games.”
