All you need to know about League One contest

21 April 2023

Pompey will aim to halt their run of draws by beating struggling Accrington at Fratton Park on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Four successive stalemates have effectively ended hopes of reaching the play-offs with three games remaining.

But while the Blues have been left frustrated in their efforts to escape League One, their next opponents are desperate to remain there.

Stanley have not finished lower than 17th since reaching this level by securing the fourth tier title in 2018.

However, only already relegated Forest Green are currently keeping John Coleman’s men off the foot of the table.

And there is a three-point gap – four if you take into account their inferior goal differece – to bridge to safety.

The Reds head south from Lancashire having lost eight of their past 10 games, collecting just four points in the process.

That sequence of results includes a 3-1 defeat to Pompey at the Crown Ground last month in a snowy contest that saw both sides reduced to 10 men.

The Blues also had a man sent off in the previous season’s Fratton contest, although Marcus Harness’ early dismissal failed to stop them from romping to a 4-0 victory.

TEAM NEWS
Ronan Curtis (knee), Jayden Reid (knee) and Zak Swanson (groin) remain sidelined, while Joe Morrell serves the final game of a four-match ban.

Accrington have been beset by injury problems throughout the season, but have no new problems, although Liam Coyle remains suspended.
