Mousinho: Not Enough Quality

Boss reflects on draw with Morecambe

10 April 2023

John Mousinho bemoaned a lack of creativity from his side after they were held to a goalless draw by Morecambe.

Tom Lowery sent two chances narrowly past the post in the first half, but it took until stoppage-time for Connor Ripley to be seriously tested.

The keeper flung himself to the left to brilliantly keep out substitute Reeco Hackett’s header and ensure the Shrimps would depart with a point.

And Mousinho wanted to see a lot more from his side going forward to test their struggling opponents.

The Blues boss said: “It’s a feeling of disappointment – not just because of the result, but also with the performance.

“We weren’t quite at the races and although I can’t fault the endeavour or energy, there wasn’t enough quality.

“The game died a death in the second half and there were times when moves broke down in areas they shouldn’t have or we gave the ball away.

“There were some gilt-edged chances before the break that we didn’t put away, but overall we didn’t create enough.

“It was frustrating because we were obviously in control of the game and had a lot of possession, then didn’t show enough bravery in the final third.

“Some of the things we did probably shocked most people inside Fratton Park and it wasn’t until the very end that their keeper had to make a good save.

“We came into the Easter weekend with a huge amount of enthusiasm and wanted to give a good account of ourselves.

“I think everyone inside the ground wanted to see a bit more creativity and ultimately we didn’t show that.”

Connor Ogilvie and Michael Jacobs were both missing for the hosts, along with Joe Morrell, who started a four-match ban following his controversial red card at MK Dons.

Mousinho explained: “Connor took a knock towards the end of the game on Friday – the referee gave a throw after he’d been absolutely clattered. Michael was struggling as well after his calf seized up.

“With Joe, we were disappointed that the first part of the incident wasn’t dealt with because he took a forearm smash to the face and was then put in a headlock.

“He’s caught their guy with his knee when he got back up and so we didn’t bother appealing. We knew it wouldn’t get overturned.”
