Bishop: Patience Is A Virtue

Striker delighted that the fans remained with Pompey in win over Exeter

15 August 2023

Pompey had to wait to for the right moment to undo a stubborn Exeter side at Fratton Park.

It was midway through the second half when Colby Bishop collected the ball from Jack Sparkes and lashed it into the net.

There had been opportunities before that point, but the Grecians had also done a good job of frustrating their hosts.

So Bishop was impressed that the supporters stayed with them throughout, playing a key role in securing all three points.

The striker said: “We’ve given ourselves something to build on and the atmosphere from the fans was amazing. I can’t tell you what a difference that makes.

“There are going to be games when sides look to make life difficult for us and we all have to remain patient.

“It’s about waiting for the right moment to come along and of course it’s nice for me to score at the Fratton End.

“Exeter are a good team – you can see that from their previous results this season – so it’s a pleasing night.

“The score doesn’t really matter – we just want to win. That’s exactly what we’ve been able to do, so we’re delighted.”

It was Bishop’s second goal of the season, although last term’s leading marksman might already have double that tally.

He was about to come on when Kusini Yengi netted from the spot at Forest Green last Tuesday and had just left the pitch when the Australian did the same against Leyton Orient at the weekend.

Bishop said: “It is what it is. I’m happy that Kas is scoring goals as well and it bodes well for the team when other players are scoring.

“My target is just to do better than last season, as it always is. If I do that then it means I’m improving as a player.”
