Mousinho: A Bizarre Afternoon

Boss reflects on draw at Stevenage

26 August 2023

John Mousinho was left bemused following Pompey’s goalless draw at Stevenage in League One.

He was frustrated by their failure to break down organised opponents, thereby missing out on two more points.

But he was more disappointed by what happened on the sidelines during a contest that became increasingly bad-tempered.

It culminated in both sides being reduced to 10 men, with Joe Rafferty and Jake Forster-Caskey punished for an off-the-ball clash.

Mousinho did not think that any red cards needed to be brandished and believed certain actions to be a bad advert for the sport.

The Blues boss said: “It’s a tough game to assess and another bizarre afternoon of football ruined by things that happened off the pitch.

“There’s some obvious stuff if you were on the same side as we were and everything we were told in the summer about participant behaviour seems to have gone completely out of the window.

"I can’t see their player doing much to Raffs or anything happening the other way. I think both of them were shocked."

“I don’t see the point. It will just switch people off football – it will certainly switch people off wanting to referee games.

“There will be stoppages, but people pay good money and want to see the ball in play for as long as possible and we’re not seeing that.

“The red cards were strange because there’s nothing in it. I thought the initial challenge was two-footed and the referee didn’t deal with it.

“Then there’s a coming together and he decides to send both players off. I can’t see their player doing much to Raffs or anything happening the other way. I think both of them were shocked.”

It was a fourth successive league clean sheet for Pompey, who created a new club record by stretching their unbeaten run to 16 games.

Mousinho said: “We’re disappointed to come away with another draw against an organised Stevenage side who are good at what they do.

“We just have to do a bit better, particularly towards the end, when there were openings and not enough chances created off the back of it.

“I thought we created a few in the first half and got into some good positions, but we wanted to get more shots away.”
