Mousinho: Progress Was Deserved

Boss reflects on Carabao Cup win at Forest Green

John Mousinho rang the changes, but it failed to halt Pompey’s charge into the second round of the Carabao Cup.

There were 10 alterations from the side that started Saturday’s league draw with Bristol Rovers, with Anthony Scully the only man to keep his spot.

That could have been viewed as hubris when Tyrese Omotoye fired the League Two hosts into the lead, but Kusini Yengi’s brace and a Zak Swanson strike turned the tie around.

And Mousinho felt that his side ultimately deserved to book their place in Wednesday evening’s draw.

The Blues boss said: “It was tough to fall behind against the run of play, but we fought back from that having missed a few chances early on.

“I thought that we were excellent in the second half and thoroughly deserved to come away with the win.

“It was such a difficult team selection on Saturday, that it actually made our job a bit easier for this one.

"I really don’t mind who we get in the next round, although the obvious answer is for a home tie because we love playing under the lights at Fratton Park."

“To me it still felt like a really strong side we put out and we wanted to pick the guys who deserved to play.

“Koby Mottoh was also involved with us because of his performance for the academy at the weekend – he was heavily involved in four of their six goals.

“So we brought him on when we went 3-1 up and I was pleasantly surprised with how good he was. He didn’t like out of place as a 16-year-old.

Yengi converted a corner and a penalty to take his tally to three goals from the opening two games.

Mousinho said: “My only criticism was that he didn’t come away with more and he probably didn’t want to come off after scoring two goals.

“I told him that if he’d taken one away early doors then he would have had a hat-trick! But I’m really pleased for him. It’s been a really promising first couple of games.”
