Mousinho: Take This Opportunity

Boss looks ahead to EFL Trophy test

22 August 2023

John Mousinho has urged those players who feature in the EFL Trophy this evening to make the most of the opportunity.

Pompey are expected to make multiple changes for their opening group stage fixture against Fulham’s under-21 side at Fratton Park.

Many of those who take to the pitch will have spent time watching from the bench or the stands so far this season.

And Mousinho wants them to show why they deserve more time on the pitch in upcoming league matches.

The Blues boss said: “In the early rounds there can be a bit of apathy towards the competition, but it’s a first team game and we’ll be taking it seriously.

“But it’s also a chance for those guys who have – perhaps undeservedly – not got as many minutes to come in and put themselves in the selection window.

“Every single professional should be wanting to perform well and win games, so that’s the challenge for everyone who plays.

"We want all players firing on all cylinders and ready to impact every single game, so this is a great opportunity to get minutes into some of them."

“It’s a good opportunity for us and there’s always that chance of getting to play at Wembley, so you have to keep your eye on that.

“We want all players firing on all cylinders and ready to impact every single game, so this is a great opportunity to get minutes into some of them.

“We can get that fitness in, see where they are and ensure they’re ready for league action if called upon.

“It's another home game and a chance to get some points on the board in our group, so we’re relishing it.”

The young Cottagers are led by a man who many of a Pompey persuasion will recognise from his time playing for the club in the Premier League and Championship.

Mousinho said: “Fulham are a decent side with a good group this season and are well coached by Hayden Mullins – a familiar face to everyone here.

“Jon Harley and I went to watch them beat Manchester City on Friday night and we expect a good team to come to Fratton Park.”
