Mousinho: We’ve Got Choices

Boss ponders selection decisions for Forest Green tie

8 August 2023

A busy opening to the new season will see Pompey take to the pitch seven times during August.

But they will be bidding to add an eighth game to that hectic schedule on Tuesday evening by progressing to the second round of the Carabao Cup.

John Mousinho takes his side to The New Lawn to face a Forest Green outfit who were relegated from League One last term.

And while changes are likely for the tie, he is confident of putting out a line-up that can go further in the competition.

The Blues boss said: “We’re going to pick a strong side that we feel can go there and win the tie, but we’ve got a lot of choice.

“There were some excellent performances at the weekend – both from starters and those who came off the bench.

“We’ve also got people who didn’t make the matchday squad against Bristol Rovers and will feel aggrieved by that.

“There’s a balance to find because a lot of players will enjoy playing on Saturday and then Tuesday and you also have to protect some.

“We’ve got seven games – hopefully eight – to play in August and you have to be sensible in how you manage minutes.

“Forest Green will provide a different challenge for us and we approach each game as it comes along in terms of tactics and selection.”

Tom Lowery is not making the trip to Nailsworth after injuring his knee during the first half of Saturday’s draw with Bristol Rovers.

Mousinho said: “The swelling was still there on Monday morning, so we’ll wait to see when that goes down and then reassess.

“Paddy Lane is making good strides, although perhaps not as quick as we first thought. We’ll hopefully have him back out training in the next couple of weeks.

“Josh Dockerill is set have an operation at the end of the month following a really positive meeting with a surgeon, so everything’s heading in the right direction for him.”
