Pompey Women 7 Swansea 0

Blues win final pre-season friendly

13 August 2023

Pompey Women completed their preparations for the new campaign with a 7-0 friendly success over Swansea.

Beth Lumsden and Emma Jones each bagged a brace at Westleigh Park, with Ava Rowbotham, Riva Casley and George Freeland also finding the target.

The hosts immediately showed that they meant business against their top-flight Welsh opponents, looking to attack from the off.

Lumsden fired an early effort into the side netting and then hit the ball narrowly over after Annie Rolf’s initial attempt had been cleared from the line.

And the forward then showed tricky footwork to carve out an opening before firing inches past the post.

So it came as no surprise when LUMSDEN broke the deadlock on 17 minutes, converting Sophie Quirk’s cross with a back-post volley.

The advantage was quickly doubled, as Izzy Collins did well to keep the ball in play and teed-up ROWBOTHAM to fire home.

And it might have got even better when Lumsden was brought down in the box, but Nicole Barrett’s penalty was saved by Claire Skinner.

The hosts did have a third goal just before the break, however, with Rolf collecting Rowbotham’s pass and squaring for JONES to slot into the net.

The Blues did not look to sit back once the action restarted and a low effort from Lumsden was blocked.

But she was not to be denied moments later, with LUMSDEN intercepting a weak pass and finding the bottom corner.

With Swansea still reeling from that setback they were hit again, as CASLEY arrived at the back post nod in a Barrett cross.

Hannah Haughton had been a virtual spectator at the other end, but kept her concentration to tip a Chloe Chivers attempt against the post.

Pompey were more clinical and soon had a sixth goal, as Lumsden turned provider to give JONES a close-range finish.

Emily Pitman almost joined the party after coming off the bench, but her fierce shot was kept out by Skinner.

Instead, the resounding win was wrapped up from the penalty spot after Quirk was brought down in the box.

It was another substitute who stepped up to take it and FREELAND made no mistake with an emphatic finish.

Pompey: Haughton; Barrett, Gane, Casley, Collins; Rowbotham, Rutherford, Rolf (Lane 61); Lumsden (Freeland 79), Jones (Pitman 73), Quirk
Subs not used: Bowers, Wild, Smith, Scott, Humphrey
