Poole: We Look So Solid

Defender says Pompey now looking to kick on after draw at Stevenage

26 August 2023

Regan Poole is part of a Pompey back-line that has kept an impressive four League One clean sheets in succession.

After a 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers on the opening day, they have not been breached by Leyton Orient, Exeter, Cheltenham and Stevenage.

The latter contest was a goalless affair that saw both sides reduced to 10 men early in the second half.

But Poole admitted that there was a feeling of disappointment at not being able to find a winner at Broadhall Way.

The defender said: “We’re frustrated because I thought we were the better side and dominated the ball, although Stevenage are a threat.

“They’re a direct team and we dealt with that well – the one clear-cut chance they had was in the first half when they hit the post.

“We looked so solid defensively and it’s just a case of us getting the ball in the back of the net, although the red cards took the life out of the game.

"It’s really positive from the defensive unit and we want to get the ball in the net, but it’s hard to break teams down."

“Now we need to kick on and there are definitely good signs there for us – we’ve kept four clean sheets in a row.

“It’s really positive from the defensive unit and we want to get the ball in the net, but it’s hard to break teams down.

“We could perhaps have four more points on the board at this stage, so there’s frustration, although it’s certainly not the worst start.”

The big talking point in Hertfordshire came when a clash between Joe Rafferty and Jake Forster-Caskey led to both being dismissed.

Poole said: “I didn’t really see the incident, so can’t comment on it too much, but I spoke to Raffs and he said there’s nothing in it from both players.

“It was tough after that and the game became very open because there’s a lot more space on the pitch.

“I’m sure it ruined things and it suited us when it was 11v11 with an extra man for us to pass the ball with. We tried to force it a bit.”
