Rafferty: Job Well Done

Defender's delight at victory in the capital

12 August 2023

Joe Rafferty made a vital contribution at both ends of the pitch during a comfortable win on the road.

The right-back provided assists for Marlon Pack and Colby Bishop during the first half at Leyton Orient.

He was also part of a solid defence that kept the home side’s forwards quiet, while an Omar Beckles own-goal and Kusini Yengi penalty sealed a 4-0 victory.

And Rafferty was delighted that Pompey’s diligent preparations paid dividends on the Brisbane Road pitch.

He said: “To come away from home, score four times and keep a clean sheet is a job well done. I enjoyed that.

“We’d worked on that first goal from the corner in training during the week, with Christian making a good movement and all the boys attacking it.

“I also thought that we were really solid defensively and again that’s what we work on when we’re on the training ground.

"We had good foundations to build upon and we went on to score twice more to complete a fantastic day."

“The gaffer said at half-time that we could have been better, but we were 2-0 up and we just needed to stay solid.

“We had good foundations to build upon and we went on to score twice more to complete a fantastic day.

“The fans were brilliant and I'm sure they will keep going travelling up and down the country to support us.”

Rafferty is hoping that this will be the season that sees Pompey finally climb out of English football’s third tier.

He said: “Absolutely nothing is guaranteed – as the club have seen in this division over the past six years.

“It’s been frustrating for the fans at times when things haven’t been going our way out there on the pitch.

“But whatever has happened is in the past and we have to look forward. We’ll forget what’s already gone and be positive.

“We don’t really care as players what’s occurred in previous seasons. We’re looking to the future and will do our very best to be up there at the end.”
