Anthony Scully is one of 12 summer signings hoping to make his competitive debut for Pompey on Saturday.
Bristol Rovers are the visitors to a sold out Fratton Park for the opening fixture of the 2023/24 League One campaign.
It comes at the end of an intense six weeks of hard work on the training pitches and in friendly matches.
And after quickly settling in his new south coast surroundings, Scully is now eager to get going on the pitch.
The forward said: “As soon as you return for pre-season, it’s all just building up to that opening fixture and so we can’t wait.
“All the boys are looking forward to it. It’s the first game of the season, we’re at home and the ground is sold out – it should be a great day.
“I don’t think you’ll get many atmospheres better than a packed Fratton Park and I’m delighted to be able to experience it on the home side.

“We’ve got a great group here and there are 12 new players, but we’ve blended well and everyone gets on.
“I really can’t speak highly enough of the boys who were here last season and the way they’ve welcomed us.
“All the people at the club have been so nice to me and my partner and we’ve been able to settle down here quickly.
“Now we’ve got a tough game against a side that have made some good signings – hopefully we’ll see two attacking teams really going for it.”
Scully will be looking to repeat the free-scoring form he showed at this level with Lincoln to earn a Championship move last year.
He said: “When I look back to what I did previously in this division, then I’m looking to do exactly the same with Pompey.
“We’ve probably got the best striker in this league and so hopefully Colby can score even more than he managed last time, with us boys around him also chipping in to take that burden off slightly.
“If you got someone who can get as many goals as him then you’d be silly not play to his strengths and that’s what we’ve got to do as a group.”
