Pompey Academy ended the year on a disappointing note with a 2-0 defeat to Forest Green at Copnor Road.

The visitors netted a goal in each half to secure all three Youth Alliance League points in the final fixture of 2023.

Lead professional development phase coach Sam Hudson said: “We started reasonably well and created chances from both our press and also some good wide play.

“But as has been the case on a few occasions in recent weeks, we weren’t able to make the most of them.

“There were some balls over our back-line that caused a few problems and Oscar was forced into making some fine saves in the early stages.

“Although we had quite a high line because of our press, we weren’t anticipating those passes well enough and some of the details weren’t there.

“Both teams were creating opportunities and it could have been 4-4 at the break, but instead we found ourselves one goal down.

"We haven’t been able to find our form in an attacking sense and the break perhaps comes at a good time for the lads."

“We changed things around and although we got the ball forward with purpose and had a lot of final third entries, we were poor on the ball.

“Forest Green created one really good chance and they scored again from that – they were much more clinical than us.

“It was relatively even, but we didn’t deserve any goals in the second half because we didn’t carry enough of a threat.

“Our team was a young one, with a lot of players from the under-16s involved, but I still expect us to do better in the final third.

“We resorted to just hoping for the best in some instances and I would have liked to see a bit more quality because we know it’s there from the work we do in the week.

“Of late, we haven’t been able to find our form in an attacking sense and the break perhaps comes at a good time for the lads.

“It gives us a chance to reset and then go again in the new year for the remaining league games and the two cup competitions that we’re still involved in.”
