Mousinho: Feet On The Ground

Boss looks ahead to Shrewsbury test

15 December 2023

There were plenty of celebrations from the Fratton faithful following the final whistle on Monday night.

A televised 2-0 victory over second-placed Bolton extended their team’s lead at the top of the League One standings.

Then followed messages of caution – after all, nothing is decided with more than half the season still to play.

But ahead of Saturday’s trip to Shrewsbury – managed by former Pompey favourite Matt Taylor – John Mousinho insisted that his side would not be getting carried away.

The Blues boss said: “We’ve been pretty good this season at keeping our feet on the ground after decent performances and results.

“The reaction after we beat Bolton was measured. We enjoyed it, but knew there was another important game coming up.

“To be honest, I haven’t had to do much with the group in that regard – they do a good job of policing themselves.

“There’s no time to dwell too much on success or failure because you’re always going to win and lose matches throughout the season.

“You deal with them as professionally as possible, so we debriefed on Tuesday and everything since then has been about Shrewsbury.

“Taylor was a bit better than me as a player, so we didn’t cross paths on the pitch! But I know all about what he did here and in his career.

“He’s a very popular figure and is doing a good job with a side who are enjoying some decent form of late.”

Colby Bishop is back in contention after recovering from an ankle injury, while there are no concerns about Abu Kamara, who limped off against Wanderers.

Mousinho said: “Abu’s absolutely fine and it was much less of a knock that we initially thought, so it’s not a problem.

“Colby is also in full training and available in full selection, so we’ve got a great dilemma with team selection coming off the back of some excellent performances from Kusini Yengi.

“We’ve got no other new injuries, with Tom Lowery and Anthony Scully out there on the pitches again.

“Connor Ogilvie is progressing slowly, but nicely, and is still a few weeks away. The other long-term issues are as they were before.”
