Mousinho: Injuries Just Bad Luck

Boss looks ahead to Northampton test

1 December 2023

John Mousinho admits that Pompey are having to deal with more than their fair share of injuries at the moment.

But he does not believe there is anything sinister about the number of players currently receiving treatment.

Leading marksman Colby Bishop became the latest victim after hurting his ankle in the midweek win at Burton.

There are also some positive signs for Mousinho, however, with a few previously absent players available for Saturday’s trip to Northampton.

The Blues boss said: “We always try to assess what we’re doing in training and in games, but a lot of the injuries have been down to bad luck.

“With Colby going over on his ankle, there’s not much you can do about that. It’s just one of those unfortunate things and it’s a big miss for us.

“He left the ground in a boot and crutches. We’re going to scan him and then see how he is over the next couple of days.

“It’s just about whether there’s any ligament damage to the ankle, but we’re hoping it won’t be too bad.

“We seem to have a few of them at the minute, but we’re still in the decent position of being to name 18 pros.

“That’s what we did on Tuesday night and Tom Lowery travelled with us, so hopefully he’s back for the weekend.

“Zak Swanson is available again after getting a bit of bone bruising and we’ve also got Gavin Whyte feeling positive and ready.”

Pompey’s next opponents will be looking to record a fourth successive League One victory this weekend.

Mousinho said: “They certainly got a good win at Blackpool the other night, who had beaten us and Shrewsbury 4-0 in their previous two games.

“It just shows what a tough league this is and also what Northampton have done since coming up from League Two last season.

“They’ve won three on the spin now and are a very well organised side who have a lot of attacking threat. We have to take that seriously.”
