Mousinho: Rise To The Occasion

Boss looks ahead to Bolton test

10 December 2023

The Sky Sports cameras have picked a top-of-the-table clash at Fratton Park for their latest televised contest.

League One leaders Pompey welcome Bolton to the south coast for a mouth-watering Monday night contest.

John Mousinho is not interested about pouring cold water on anyone’s excitement by downplaying the game’s appeal.

He is aware that keeping his squad grounded is key, but admits that facing Ian Evatt’s men is an exciting prospect.

The Blues boss said: “There’s no point saying it’s anything other than a big match for both clubs – it’s first against second in front of the television cameras.

“But it’s nothing out of the ordinary in terms of what the players are capable of handling and we want to rise to the occasion.

“It’s also about remaining professional, though, and treating it as we would any other game of football with our preparations.

“I remember when we beat Bolton last season and it was one of the best atmospheres of my tenure here so far.

“I think that both sides have improved since then – they’ve definitely changed – and it’s going to be completely different this time around.

“Bolton have got a good system and know what they’re doing, while there’s a lot of attacking quality. They’ll always be a goal threat.

“They’re right up there with us and definitely one of the best sides in the division, so a win would be fantastic.”

Marlon Pack and Alex Robertson have impressed as a midfield duo in away wins at Burton and Northampton, but Joe Morrell is available again after completing a two-match ban.

Mousinho said: “I think that he was one of our best players before getting sent off and was probably in the form of his life.

“He’s a Welsh international and an excellent footballer, while Alex has also been a top performer lately, so it’s a tough one.

“Marlon has come back into the side and looked strong, but these are the problems and dilemmas you want to have.

“You discuss these things with the coaches and analysts to make a decision on what will work best for us on Monday night.”

Leading marksman Colby Bishop is currently on the sidelines, but should not be out of action for too long.

Mousinho said: “We’re not looking at anything that we perhaps feared and so it’s probably going to be a three or four-week period.

“It’s still a while away for Connor Ogilvie and we don’t want to rush that one, but there are no new injuries.

“Tom Lowery has another full week under his belt, while Anthony Scully has also returned to full training.

“We’re perhaps looking for him to get some minutes in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, which would be a good bonus.”
