Mousinho's Delight At Top-Of-The-Table Triumph

Boss reflects on victory over Bolton

11 December 2023

There were chances at both ends of the pitch during an absorbing first half Fratton contest between League One’s top two sides.

But it was Pompey who went in ahead at the break after Conor Shaughnessy headed home a Jack Sparkes corner against Bolton.

And the hosts then controlled the second 45 minutes in impressive fashion before Kusini Yengi made sure of the points late on.

It moved them six points clear at the summit, with a display that John Mousinho felt deserved plenty of praise.

The Blues boss said: “It was a really well contested game in the first half and both sides had been unlucky not to score.

“Dion Charles missed from a couple of yards out, which is unlike him, but I felt we had the better of the chances.

“We created plenty, were a constant threat and got the goal from a nice set-piece. If you deliver the ball well and attack it with aggression, then you don’t have to be too fancy.

"I thought that our overall performance – particularly in the second half – against one of the division’s top sides was really pleasing."

“I can’t really remember Will Norris having to do much after the break and we looked comfortable, pressing high and aggressively.

“There weren’t necessarily a lot of chances, but we got ourselves into some good positions and when we put a nice move together late on, we scored.

“I thought that our overall performance – particularly in the second half – against one of the division’s top sides was really pleasing.”

Yengi led the line in place of the injured Colby Bishop and eventually came out on top in a ding-dong battle with Wanderers skipper Ricardo Almeida Santos.

Mousinho said: “It was great to watch, except those moments when he got the wrong side of him and was pulled back, although I thought the referee was otherwise excellent.

“The battle was unbelievable and he’s one of the best centre-backs in the league, so for Kusini to do that in his second league start was great.

“He fully deserved the goal because of the way he led the line and the way we pressed high up the pitch.

“Kusini keeps himself in incredibly good nick – as you can probably see – and it just shows the importance of having a squad.”
