Rafferty: The Here And Now

Defender explains why Shrewsbury is his only focus

14 December 2023

The hectic festive schedule means that Pompey still have to play another six games before the decorations come down.

There are league contests with Fleetwood, Bristol Rovers, Exter and Stevenage to come between now and New Year’s Day, as well as a Bristol Street Motors clash with AFC Wimbledon.

But Joe Rafferty is not looking behind this weekend’s trip to Shropshire to take on an in-form Shrewsbury.

And the defender hopes the Blues can continue their winning run after recovering from a first defeat of the season to secure three victories in a row.

He said: “After the Blackpool loss it was important to get back to basics and make sure we were doing things right.

“You just focus on trying to get one clean sheet and now we’ve got three in a row, so have to keep building on that.

"I personally don’t really look at the bigger picture – I focus on the here and now, and the game we’ve got on Saturday."

“There’s depth in our squad – which we probably lacked a bit last season – and there’s no reason why we can’t keep doing well.

“But I personally don’t really look at the bigger picture – I focus on the here and now, and the game we’ve got on Saturday.

“I don’t even look at the league table, so couldn’t tell you how many points we’ve got. Once Shrewsbury is gone, then I look to the next one.

“We’ll go there with the same mentality we had on Monday and know that the fans will be there in their numbers, as they always are when we go away.”

Rafferty missed a big chunk of last season through injury, but has been a regular during the current campaign.

He said: “I’m just happy to be out there on the pitch and playing regularly. I feel really good in myself right now.

“I’m probably the fittest I’ve been in my career so far – it’s 10 times better than being stuck in the physio room.”
