Whyte Christmas

Forward confident ahead of Boxing Day test

24 December 2023

Gavin Whyte is hoping that Pompey can spread some festive cheer when they visit Bristol Rovers on Boxing Day.

The third tier table-toppers are the only professional side in the country yet to be beaten on their league travels this season.

They approach their trip to the Memorial Stadium on the back of a frustrating home draw with Fleetwood just before Christmas.

But Whyte believes that previous form throughout the campaign means the Blues should retain plenty of belief.

The summer signing said: “It wasn’t the result we wanted on Saturday. Fleetwood made life tough for us and we needed to be better.

“We don’t expect it to get any easier on Boxing Day, but we’re confident we can go there and get a result.

“To do that we’ll need to play the way we have been in recent weeks – we’ve done well at home and on the road.

“Bristol Rovers are a decent side and I can remember that they made it tough for us on the opening day of the season.

“I’ve played there on a few occasions before and always found it a tough place to visit, but we can go with confidence.

“It’s a busy schedule at the moment. I know it’s a cliché, but you do just have to take each game as it comes and not get too far ahead of yourselves.

“We work hard on the training pitch to get ready for these matches and have to dig deep to produce our best.”

The home club’s stadium works mean that there will only be around 750 away fans at the game, with tickets snapped up as soon as they went on sale.

Whyte said: “The supporters are unbelievable – no matter where we go or how far the trip is, there are always a load them.

“They have spurred us on this season and have been absolutely brilliant. I’m sure that it will be the same again in Bristol.”
