Lane treble helps secure another Blues victory

Dani Lane hit a hat-trick as Pompey Women eased to victory over London Bees to keep their spot at the National League summit.

Tierney Scott was also on target at The Hive, with a fine Danielle Puddefoot free-kick proving no more than a consolation for the hosts.

Jay Sadler made two changes from the side that beat Gillingham last week, as Lane and Scott came in for Taylor Macdonald and Sophie Quirk.

But it was the Londoners who were first to threaten, with Hannah Haughton keeping out Danielle Tan’s effort from the edge of the box.

And a cross was then headed narrowly wide by Ashleigh Goddard, as the Bees tried to grab an early lead.

Pompey were struggling to make the most of their superior possession at the other end, although Annie Rolf saw her long-range strike deflected behind.

But they broke the deadlock on 30 minutes, when skipper Danielle Rowe’s delivery was nodded home by LANE at the back post.

She might have doubled the advantage moments later after cutting inside, but was this time denied by Mia North.

A second goal did arrive just before the break, however, as LANE collected Rolf’s lofted pass over the defence and coolly slotted the ball into the net.

Bolu Fisher had a chance to reduce the home side’s deficit shortly after the interval, only to drag her shot past the post.

And the Blues were in no mood to let their opponents off the hook, with Scott only denied by a tight angle after some brilliant combination play between Rowe and Anaisa Harney.

They did manage to effectively wrap the points up on the hour mark, though, as LANE nodded home Rowe’s corner to complete her treble.

A fourth goal then arrived straight from the restart, as Leanne Bell drove forward and squared for SCOTT to poke home at the back post.

Puddefoot did find the net for the Bees, drilling a low free-kick past Haughton from the edge of the area.

That failed to instil any nerves in the Blues back-line, however, and it was the visitors who continued to look the more dangerous side.

Ali Hall came off the bench and curled the ball narrowly wide following good work from Lane to win back possession.

And Lane missed out on the chance to take her tally to four goals late on, powerfully heading Ella Humphrey’s cross inches past the post.

Pompey: Haughton; Barrett, Gane, Rowe (c), Collins (Quayle 75); Lane, Rowbotham, Rolf (Macdonald 75); Bell (Humphrey 83), Harney (Hall 65), Scott (Younger 83)
