Mousinho: Let’s Show How Far We’ve Come

Boss looks ahead to Bolton test

28 February 2023

A stunning first half performance saw Pompey blow Cheltenham away to secure a thumping victory on Saturday.

And John Mousinho knows they will need more of the same if three more points are to be collected against Bolton this evening.

Their fourth-placed opponents head to the south coast having won seven of their past eight League One matches to boost hopes of automatic promotion.

With a trip to Wembley in the Papa Johns Trophy also on the horizon, Mousinho knows Wanderers provide a formidable test.

The Blues boss said: “They’ve had some emphatic wins – such as scoring five at Peterborough – and have reached the Papa Johns Trophy final.

“So they’re absolutely the form team in the division. They’re getting plenty of goals and not conceding many.

“There has been a continuity in style under Ian Evatt, who took them up from League Two, and have added well to their squad.

"We’ll be looking for a high energy performance to follow on from Saturday and hopefully, off the back of that, we will get a result."

“Bolton look a real threat and so it’s another big test for us. I watched the away game up there just before I came in and it was comprehensive for them.

“We want to show how far we’ve come since then and there will be guys in our changing room who were hurt back then and this is a chance to seek a bit of redemption.

“We’ll be looking for a high energy performance to follow on from Saturday and hopefully, off the back of that, we will get a result.

“The way we played against an organised Cheltenham side – especially in the first half – is something we can certainly take confidence from.

“That was a benchmark for us and it’s something we need to match week in, week out for the full 90 minutes.”

Pompey are unlikely to have any more players available to face Bolton, but there was some positive news regarding an absent midfielder.

Mousinho said: “There’s no change on the injury front and we’ll keep monitoring Tom Lowery, who’s available for selection, but Tuesday probably comes a bit too soon.”
