Mousinho: Summer Planning Already Started

Boss discusses transfer window business and Barnsley test

2 February 2023

Transfer deadline day often throws up images of club staff scrambling to feed paper into the fax machine before the window slams shut.

But John Mousinho revealed that it was a relatively tranquil affair when Pompey completed their January business on Tuesday.

Di’Shon Bernard arrived on loan from Manchester United, while a fee was paid to bring Paddy Lane in from Fleetwood.

Rather than sitting back and savouring those signings, however, Mousinho is already looking ahead to the summer.

The Blues boss said: “It was fairly calm and there was no last minute panic – all the business we wanted to get done was tidied up by around 8.30pm on Tuesday night.

“We shook hands, said ‘well done’ and then made our way home, while keeping the phones switched on just in case.

“But although everyone else is waiting for the dust to settle following deadline day, we’re already planning for the summer.

“The reason you’re doing that is because you don’t want to be having to find those last-gasp solutions.

“That’s why we were pleased that we weren’t having to scramble to sort something just before 11pm.

“It’s not always possible to get business done early, but you need options so you can work your way down your list and be happy with what you’re doing.

“If you do have one of those chaotic days, then so be it because sometimes things are out of your control, but everything certainly went to plan for us in January.

“When we sat down and reflected on it, we thought it was successful. We brought in two loans who can come in and compete for spots and two exciting young prospects.”

The Fratton faithful could get a first glimpse of the new signings when sixth-placed Barnsley visit the south coast on Saturday.

Mousinho said: “I went to watch them against Oxford on Wednesday night and they’re an excellent side – they thoroughly deserved the victory.

“They’re well drilled and Michael Duff has them playing some excellent football. After coming down from the Championship, they’re looking to push straight back up.”

Mousinho has had to make do without several injured players since being appointed head coach, but the treatment room is starting to clear up.

He said: “Joe Rafferty has trained with us fully this week, which is great news, although I’m not entirely sure whether he’ll be in contention for the weekend.

“We certainly don’t want to rush him – we’re another week closer and that’s the most important thing.

“Clark Robertson and Jay Mingi are coming along nicely, although I think Ronan Curtis is closer than those two and we could possibly have him back for Burton.

“We took Tom Lowery through some testing protocols earlier in the week and he came through them well.

“It’s just about making sure that he’s comfortable before returning and most of the time we have to protect the players from themselves.”
