Mousinho: We Need To Capitalise On Fratton Atmosphere

Boss looking forward to Burton test

14 February 2023

John Mousinho has largely been pleased with what he has seen from his Pompey side since taking charge last month.

He knows there is still plenty of room for improvement, though, ahead of a midweek tussle with Burton.

That precedes a trip to Lincoln on Saturday and means there is a busy week of preparation and recovery.

But Mousinho is pleased to be experiencing his first taste of a floodlit Fratton fixture when the Brewers come to down.

The Blues boss said: “The League One table can change very quickly and we’ve got six points to play for this week.

“There’s no let-up and there are still a lot of games left this season. It’s really exciting and we need to capitalise on that.

“Hopefully we’ve turned a corner – at home and away – in terms of performances, except perhaps for Peterborough, where I was disappointed with us for around 60 minutes.

“I thought we looked controlled and composed in the first half at Plymouth on Saturday and now we need to make the most of what we’ve got at Fratton Park.

“There’s an incredible atmosphere and the fans have got right behind us for the 180 minutes I’ve been here so far – we’ll need more of that on Tuesday.”

As a player, Mousinho was part of the Burton side that secured back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship.

He said: “I’ve got fond memories of my time there and that perhaps add something to the game for me, but ultimately it’s about the players we send out.

“There’s been a large turnover since I was at the club, although I do know their manager from our time at Stevenage and Preston.

“I had a good three years there – winning promotion twice and then staying up in the Championship – but the most important thing is that we compete on Tuesday night.

“Burton had an excellent transfer window and have done really well to win their past three games. They’ll come here full of confidence.”

January signing Matt Macey missed Saturday’s defeat at League One leaders Plymouth with an illness.

Mousinho said: “We’re still monitoring him to see whether he’ll be okay, while Zak Swanson unfortunately felt one of his old injuries in training on Friday.

“So we’re just being cautious with him and it looks like he’ll miss Tuesday, but we’ve welcomed Ronan Curtis back into the fold.”
