Pompey Academy Host Latest CPD Session

Local coaches and scouts attended event

7 February 2023

Pompey Academy hosted their latest coaching continued professional development (CPD) event for coaches from local grassroots clubs.

The event took place in the Victory Lounge at Fratton Park, beginning with an introduction from head of academy coaching James Barlow and academy manager Greg Miller.

Barlow hosted the event and provided a detailed blueprint of how academy staff work towards their targets within the club's youth age groups.

He said: "The evening was a real success. Having over 75 people in attendance, sharing information on how the academy delivers the 'blueprint', with a real focus on playing forward – an area of interest to all coaches within the game.

"The importance of growing a community of practice with the County FA, local clubs and coaches holds tremendous weight to showcase how we develop best practice, creating an open platform for coaches to learn and for key relationships to be enhanced.

"The event was delivered using a blended approach of how we coach at Portsmouth, how we measure, and what the elite game is telling us.

"A big thank you must also go out to all the staff who delivered and enhanced the quality of the event to provide a memorable occasion."

His talk was followed by presentations from assistant PDP lead coach Sam Hudson and lead academy analyst Jack Rogers, who explained how their roles are also key to the academy's success.

When reflecting on the event, one grassroots coach said: "This was the first one I went to and there were some great insights into some of the finer details that goes into being a successful coach.

"Being able to pick the Pompey coaches' brains has given me an opportunity to learn from them.

"Now I can consider how to use their ideas in my own coaching sessions on a Thursday night, ready for matches on a Sunday. It's been really valuable in that aspect."

These events continue to strengthen the link between the club's academy and the local grassroots football clubs in the area.

They have been well-received by coaches and scouts in attendance, with another attendee saying: "It was an amazing experience for me to come down and see so many other coaches here, connecting and combining and sharing ideas with each other."

Due to the success of these CPDs so far, the Blues’ youth set-up will be looking to host another in the future. More details on this will be announced in due course.
