Hall and Quirk on target for Blues

19 February 2023

Pompey Women maintained their position at the top of the National League table with a 2-0 victory over Cheltenham at Westleigh Park.

Ali Hall marked her full debut by opening the scoring in the first half, with Sophie Quirk wrapping things up late on.

Jay Sadler made three changes from the side that eased to victory at London Bees the previous week.

Hall, Quirk and Jazz Younger all came into the starting line-up, with Evie Gane, Anaisa Harney and Tierney Scott making way.

There was not much to separate the sides in the opening stages, although the visitors survived a scramble after Danielle Rowe had lifted the ball into the box.

But the deadlock was broken in style on 19 minutes, courtesy of a sensational first Blues goal for HALL.

The forward collected a ball over the top from Izzy Collins and found the net with an audacious lifted finish over Aimee Watson.

Collins was then called into action at the other end, making a superb recovery challenge on Izzy Cook to deny the Robins midfielder a close-range attempt.

The Blues were still looking to increase their advantage, however, and Bell’s effort was deflected behind for a corner.

Quirk was next to go close, cutting inside from the right and firing in a shot that left the crossbar rattling.

The forward line were causing real problems for Cheltenham and Hall then struck the post after Quirk had cut the ball back.

There was danger shortly after the restart when the visitors broke quickly up the pitch, only for a resolute Rowe to deal with the danger.

But Pompey were not happy to sit back and protect their lead, which they almost managed to double just past the hour mark.

The woodwork was hit for a third time when Quirk’s delivery came back off the bar, then ricocheted wide off Bell.

Both sides soon had long-range efforts, with Annie Rolf and Cook denied by Watson and Hannah Haughton respectively.

So there was a sigh of relief all around the ground when the hosts finally got their second goal on 83 minutes.

Rolf played the ball to QUIRK, who again cut in from the wing before angling the ball into the top corner.

Cheltenham, to their credit, kept fighting right until the very end, but the Blues saw out the closing stages without too many issues.

Pompey: Haughton; Barrett, Younger, Rowe (c), Collins (Quayle 90+4); Lane, Rowbotham (Macdonald 68), Rolf; Bell (Gane 85), Hall (Harney 90+4), Quirk (Scott 87)
