Rafferty: I Want Game After Game

Defender hungry for more matches ahead of Cheltenham test

23 February 2023

Joe Rafferty has made a seamless transition back into the Pompey defence after five months away.

The right-back played the full 90 minutes of the last home match against Burton, having completed his recovery from a stomach problem that required surgery.

He followed that up by starting the draw at Lincoln a few days later, getting through 82 minutes before being replaced by Di’Shon Bernard.

And Rafferty will now hope to be involved once more when Cheltenham visit the south coast on Saturday.

He said: “It’s been brilliant for me and I’ve really enjoyed being back after such a long time on the sidelines.

“I couldn’t wait to get on the pitch again and starting the past two games is something I’ve really enjoyed – I can’t wait for another one.

“There were a few knocks and a bit of cramp at Lincoln last week, so I did the sensible thing – probably for the first time in my life – by coming off.

“We’ve got a lot of matches coming up and plenty of Saturday-Tuesdays. It’s important for everyone in the squad to stay fit and be ready.

“But that’s great for me because I just want to play game after game at the moment. I’ve missed enough football this season.”

Cheltenham suffered penalty shoot-out heartache earlier in the week, losing to Plymouth in the semi-finals of the Papa Johns Trophy.

Rafferty said: “They must have been gutted to miss out because it would have been a lovely trip for them to go to Wembley.

“But we know they’ll be coming here and fighting for points – as we see from every side in this division because we all have our individual goals.

“Everyone’s excited about returning to Fratton and we can take a bit of confidence into the game – we’re really looking forward to it.”
