Bassey: Give Everything You’ve Got

Interim head coach wants to see standards maintained at Bolton

9 January 2023

There were almost 9,000 Pompey fans in a crowd of more than 60,000 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

It promises to be a quieter affair, however, when the Blues visit Bolton on Tuesday evening in the Papa Johns Trophy.

But Simon Bassey knows that whoever comes out on top will be just one victory away from a spot at Wembley.

And after witnessing an impressive display against Premier League opposition in the FA Cup, he wants those standards to be maintained.

Pompey’s interim head coach said: “Every game is different and you have to be adaptable, but I want us to be aggressive and hard-working.

“We have to give ourselves the best chance of winning and everything my players have got, I want to see it. We’ll see where that takes us.

“There aren’t a load of players available at the moment, so we’ll go as strong as we can, although there will be some freshening up.

“It was five years ago to the day on Saturday when we went to Wembley with AFC Wimbledon to play Tottenham because they were ground sharing there.

“I also went there when we beat Plymouth in the League Two play-off final and it’s an iconic stadium. It would be a brilliant occasion if Pompey could get back there.

“But Bolton are a really strong team and have recruited well. They’re in good form and I’m expecting a competitive match.”

Louis Thompson will be among those making the trip north after coming off the bench against Spurs for his first appearance since suffering a broken leg in August.

Bassey said: “We got 15 minutes into him that we hadn’t really planned for and now we’ll hope to get a few more on Tuesday night.

“He’s ahead of the curve now and he’ll have to build up, but he’s been training well and is a consummate professional.

“Louis is a great character and every group needs those – more importantly, though, he’s a really good player and person.

“We’ll have another look at Clark Robertson this week, but he’s the only other one we’ve got who’s close to coming back.”
